The mountainous Sfakion

Sfakion, also know as Sfakia, is a mountainous region located within the south western area of Crete, in the Greek prefecture of Chania. This destination is very attractive by what it offers as well as by the several other appealing spots it has near by, being ideal for all those visitors who wish to be able to meet a variety of different places in a short period of time.

One of the first things tourists should try during their visit to Sfakion is the town's traditional food. One of the most famous dishes of Sfakion is the Sfakian Pie, a sort of pancakes made with honey and filled with local cream cheese. Besides this, there also are several other appealing dishes and beverages visitors should not miss being in Sfakion.

The history of Sfakion is very interesting, and it is famous by being one of the central spots of the resistance against the Turks and the Venetians. Due to its strategic location, between rocky beaches and the White Mountains, has allowed this spot to be perfect for fighting invaders and impeding their entrance to that area of Crete.

Another important moment in the history of Sfakion took place during World War II, after what is known as the Battle of Crete. During a night of May, in 1941, local people of Sfakion helped soldiers from Australia and New Zealand escape, in the same way they had already helped King George II escaping after the German invasion.

The inhabitants of Sfakion maintain many of the town's ancient traditions, in such a way that this destination is quite unique and peculiar. This destination seems to have a law and regulation form of its own, and is without any doubt one of the most peculiar and traditional places tourists could find in Crete. This way, Sfakion is very appealing due to a variety of different reasons, among which we can remark its interesting history, its unique cuisine, its strong traditions, its charming constructions, and the beauty of its beaches and landscapes, being this way often described as very attractive for tourists of different preferences.
