The island of Kos - near Turkey

The Greek island of Kos, with a territory of about 340 km2 and a population of 30.500 inhabitants, is part of the Dodecanese archipelago and is characterized by counting with beautiful beaches and a variety of commodities and attractions. Besides this, Kos is very close to several other Greek destinations as well as at only 4 km from the Turkish coast, in such a way that, while being in this island, tourists can also easily visit many different spots.

The economy of Kos is based on farming and tourism. Farmers from Kos produce or grow and export figs, olives, almonds, grapes, corn, wheat, lettuce and tomatoes, among others. Tourism is also an important source of income for the inhabitants of the island, and this can be reflected in the several hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, pubs, taverns, and cafes this destination has.

The capital town of this island is also called Kos and is where visitors can find most of the tourist commodities and facilities of this destination. Also, in this area of the island, and more exactly next to the harbor, visitors would meet one of its most important antique constructions: a fortress built in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John.

An interesting fact to know about Kos is that this is believed to be the birthplace of the ancient physician Hippocrates. Towards the central area of the island, tourists could find an ancient tree, known as the Plane Tree of Hippocrates or the Dream Temple, where Hippocrates used to teach and educate apprentices.

Besides the town of Kos, there also are several other settlements and villages tourists should not miss in this island. Among the most interesting spots visitors can meet in Kos there is, for example, Tigaki, Kardamena, Zia, Antimachia, Kefalos, Mastihari, Pyli, Marmari, Platani, Asfendious, Zipari, and Lagoudi. Among these places, one of the most popular among young people is Karkadema, where they can find several nightclubs and pubs. On the other hand, those who wish to spend a more tranquil vacation could also easily do so at several of the other villages in the island.
