Alonnisos - in the Sporades
Alonnisos is an island, a municipality, and a village located within the Sporades archipelago of Greece. The island of Alonnisos is located near Skopelos and Skiathos in the Aegean Sea, and offers a variety of beautiful natural landscapes combined with an exciting nightlife and many cultural and historic spots to visit.
The village of Alonnisos is located towards the southern area of the island and is one of the first places tourists should visit when meeting this destination, although there also are several other attractive spots spread throughout its territory as well. No matter what the age or preferences of visitors are, Alonnisos offers such a variety of attractions that they will surely be able to have a great time while visiting this destination.
The history of Alonnisos can be traced back to as long ago as the 4th century BC. This way, it is not difficult to imagine the great amount of interesting events this place has gone through and the wide amount of historical constructions and places it has. While visiting this destination, tourists could observe constructions that show Roman, Byzantine, or Venetian characteristics among others.
The island of Alonnisos is located nearby several other islands and attractive spots, such as,for example, Agios Konstantinos, Volos, Skiathos, and Thessaloniki. Besides this, the municipality of Alonnisos counts with several other islands besides Alonnisos itself, such as Psathoura, Persitera, Gioura, Adhelfopoulo, Kyra Panagia, Piperi, Pelagos, and Skantzoura.
Alonnisos is well known in the Sporades by its production of grapes, olives, almonds, and figs among others. Besides this, this island also bases part of its resources on its fishing activity, but the most important amount of its income comes from tourism and the activities related to it. In the last decades, this island has been becoming more and more popular from the point of view of tourism and despite of the fact that it has been modernized and adapted to this fact, it has also managed to maintain most of its natural beauty unchanged.
One of the most attractive spots tourists would find in Alonnisos is the National Marine Park. The National Marine Park of Alonnisos was the first one of its kind to be founded in Greece and is a very interesting place to visit, especially to all those who enjoy observing the nature and undersea life from close.
